He loved the experience so much he is now the Fundraising Chair for Mizzou Global Brigades and is going to Honduras in May 2014 with the Dental Brigade.
What kind of realizations did you have while on the brigade?
"Before that trip, I had always undervalued the effect of dental care on a person's overall well-being.It was all amazing STAY OPEN MINDED. I cannot stress enough how much you will grow as a person, and as a future health care provider, while you're on a brigade. Don't limit the experience you can have in country by coming in with a preconceived idea of the situations you'll be put in."
What was a memory that you made while in country?
"Working in Honduras was when I first fell in love with dentistry, so obviously, the dental clinic as a whole was my favorite thing. In relation to my response on what was my favorite thing about working in country, we had a patient come into the clinic the day I was working with a severe decay between his front two teeth. After Dr. Karen filled his cavity, it was if a new person was standing in front of us who was incredibly confident with his smile. This was and still is the most moving experience I have had in a health care setting. The major realization I had was the immense impact that a person's dental hygiene can have on their self-esteem and identity as a person."
What is something embarassing that happened to you on the trip?
"Ummmm.... On the first night in country I broke a chair I was sitting on. If you want details, you can ask me privately."
